Two received the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration awarded for valour: Lieutenant Milton F. Gregg from Mountain Dale and Private Herman Good of Bathurst.

Among the New Brunswick units that fought at on the Western Front in France and Belgium was the 26th (New Brunswick) Battalion, raised throughout the province in November 1914, the 26th went overseas in June 1915 and reached Belgium in September.
